What is Tri-M?

History

Incorporated in 1952 as the “Modern Music Masters” (hence the current “Tri-M” name). In 1983 it became an approved program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and in 1986 Tri-M was recognized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) as an approved program.

Purpose

It is the international music honor society for junior high and high school students that is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music, leadership, and service. Members participate in different service projects throughout the year and submit their projects for recognition by the national organization.

Why Tri-M?

Promotes High Academic Achievement

Tri-M is an honor society, not a campus social club. As such, students must apply for membership and maintain at least a B or better average in all music classes, as well as stay in good standing at school. Students’ membership will lapse if they do not meet these requirements.

Service Oriented

Each Tri-M chapter’s leadership sets goals for the chapter, both yearly and long-term. Goals are set for program service projects, program leadership, community service, and social collaborations.

Collegiate Membership and Music Education

Tri-M creates the opportunity for connections to local university collegiate California Music Educators Association chapters and music societies through joint service projects, music advocacy days, and more. It promotes music education through music performances and local community service projects. Tri-M members are motivated to be involved in college and beyond by becoming collegiate leaders, lifelong music supporters and/or by choosing to be music educators.
